A wonderful long weekend with Maeve. The ward is pretty much empty with most kids getting discharged on Friday. It’s been blissfully quiet.

Today Maeve was allowed a day trip home for a few hours. It was wonderful to cook in the kitchen and have her babbling next to me.

Wow. What a sega to get home yesterday.
Everything was going smoothly. An ambulance arrived to take us and a nurse to Billy Bishop airport. Our plane and crew welcomed us aboard and we took off without a hitch at 11am. Maeve slept the whole plane ride.
As we landed in Ottawa, our flight paramedic made a comment that hinted what was to unravel.
Paramedic: Great! Let’s see this time when our EMS will get here.
Maeve’s nurse and I exchanged surprised looks.
Paramedic: One time, we had to wait 3 hours before the Ottawa paramedics came.
Nurse and I: WHAT?!!!!!
We all wait anxiously in the plane as our paramedic phoned in our status.
Paramedic: Yeaaaaa, looks like there are no EMS available. Not sure when we’ll get out of here.
Me: Can I just call my husband to pick us up? We can all fit in the truck.
Paramedic: Uhhhhh, let me check. (Dials phone and quietly chats). No ma’am. Not possible.
Everyone gets off the plane and into the pilots lounge. Our nurse hurriedly hooks up Maeve’s meds. Maeve barfs all over me without warning.
Confusion ensues as we try getting a private patient transfer service to get us. One department says yes. A
hospital replies no. EMS is cancelled. We get bumped priority with the other service. EMS is recalled. Dana frantically waits at the hospital trying to find what’s causing the delay.
3.5 hours later, an ambulance arrives and takes us to CHEO. 😣
Maeve is now settled into CHEO for the next 2 weeks. I slept in my bed for the first time in a month and it was soooooooooooo wonderful.

Location. Last day in Torontooooooo!!

Health status: stable and strong

After days and back and forth between doctors and hospitals and nurses... we’re being sent HOME!!!!!!!

Can barely keep my eyes open. Need to pack for the 10am flight with Maeve. No helicopter this time thank god 🙏🏼

We’ll finish the remaining weeks of antibiotics at CHEO before any discussion of Gtube resumes.

Best picture of the trip - Maeve needs to wear some extra pacemaker monitors for 48+ hours... apparently it comes with a mesh crop top 😂😂😂

the weekend

Thank you for all the Mother’s Day love. The hospital and Ronald McDonald really went all out to make their mamas feel appreciated.

Dana opened our apartment door to find two HUGE packages from an assortment of donors. There was a Mother’s Day brunch and crafts. I felt very spoiled.

The best part? I’ve been encouraged to go home EVERY night!!!!!!! My terror of moving to this new floor has slowly melted away. Every night, I timidly work up the courage to ask the night nurse how many kids she/he has to watch tonight and if she/he thinks it’s okay if I leave. I breathe such a sigh of relief when they reassuringly tell me to “get outta here!”

Maeve has been doing wonderfully. We’re down to two IV meds and fever free! We get to go for walks outside and I even found a snap romper that accommodates all her wires!

Still no date for Gtube surgery. The doctors on this floor hinted that if a date isn’t set for this week, they’ll consider flying us home to CHEO to do that surgery.

Enough of that.... let’s see pictures!!!

We’ve had eventful and uneventful days. General Surgery has confirmed they can do a variation of the Gtube so we’re on the waitlist!

They want Maeve to be infection free which has proven difficult. Despite many tests, Maeve is still showing no signs of infection so they’ve bundled under “Infection Negative [infection]”. This basically means they are treating her like she has an infection even though they can’t prove it. So we continue a whack ton of antiobiotics and negotiating with General Surgery to accept Maeve.

We’ve been moved to a new ward which comes with pros and cons. Pro - we get a private room where I can eat by the bedside (more importantly, I can drink coffee!). Con - parents are highly encouraged to stay with their kid the whole time.

As a parent flying solo, Dana is home with the other girls, this is terrifying. Hourly nurse checks through the night. Announcements over the speaker and having to console Maeve if she’s woken at an inoppprtune time. And then the expectation to watch her during the day in a room where there is nothing but a TV to distract her.

Luckily, I’ll get some relief this weekend and perhaps into the week if we’re kept here. There’s negotiations as to whether Maeve will go to ICU or observation ward or CHEO after her GTube surgery.

No date for surgery but at least we’re getting cute pictures and a bit more freedom everyday!
